Mama's hands
She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.
When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence
and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.
Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check
on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK.
She raised her head and looked at me and smiled.
"Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she
said in a clear voice strong.
"I didn't mean to disturb you, Mama, but you were just
sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure
you were OK," I explained to her.
"Have you ever looked at your hands," she asked.
"I mean really looked at your hands?"
I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them.
I turned them over, palms up and then palms down.
No, I guess I had never really looked at
my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.
Mama smiled and related this story:
"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have,
how they have served you well throughout your years.
These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been
the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab
and embrace life.
"They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I
crashed upon the floor.
They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back.
As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer.
They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots.
They held my husband and wiped my tears when
he went off to war.
"They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent.
They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my
newborn son.
Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world
that I was married and loved someone special
They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I
buried my parents and spouse.
"They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors,
and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.
They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed
and cleansed the rest of my body.
They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken,dried
and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else
of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down,
and again continue to fold in prayer.
"These hands are the mark of where I've been
and the ruggedness of life.
But more importantly it will be these hands
that God will reach out and take when he leads me home.
And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I
will use these hands to touch the face of GOD
I will never look at my hands the same again.
But I remember God reached out and took my Mama's hands
and led her home.
When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face
of my children and husband I think of Mama.
I know she has been stroked and caressed and
held by the hands of God.
I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands
upon my face.
Let's continue praying for one another.

THE OLD PATHS
Moms were at home.
Dads were at work.
Brothers went into the army.
And sisters got married BEFORE having children!
Crime did not pay;
Hard work did;
And people knew the difference.
Moms could cook;
Dads would work;
Children would behave.
Husbands were loving;
Wives were supportive;
And children were polite.
Women wore the jewellery;
And Men wore the pants.
Women looked like ladies;
Men looked like gentlemen;
And children looked decent.
People loved the truth,
And hated a lie;
They came to church to get IN,
Not to get OUT!
Hymns sounded Godly;
Sermons sounded helpful;
Rejoicing sounded normal;
And crying sounded sincere.
Cursing was wicked;
Drugs were for illness;
And divorce was unthinkable.
The flag was honoured;
South Africa was beautiful;
And God was welcome!
We read the Bible in public;
Prayed in school;
And preached from house to house
To be called a South African was worth dying for;
To be called a Christian was worth living for;
To be called a traitor was a shame!
And Christians rejoiced because they had the VICTORY!
Preachers preached from the Bible
Singers sang from the heart;
And sinners turned to the Lord to be SAVED!
A new birth meant a new life;
Salvation meant a changed life;
Following Christ led to eternal life.
Being a preacher meant you proclaimed the word of God;
Being a deacon meant you would serve the Lord;
Being a Christian meant you would live for Jesus;
And being a sinner meant someone was praying for you!
Laws were based on the Bible;
Homes read the Bible;
And churches taught the Bible.
God was worshiped;
Christ was exalted;
And the Holy Spirit was respected..
Church was where you found Christians
on the Lord's day, rather than in the garden,
on the river bank, on the golf course,
Or being entertained somewhere else.
I still like the old paths the best!
BEAUTIFUL CHRISTIAN SISTER
By Maya Angelou
'A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ
That a man should have to seek Him first to find her.'
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I'm not shouting 'I'm clean living,'
I'm whispering 'I was lost, Now I'm found and forgiven.'
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.
When I say.. 'I am a Christian' I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I still feel the sting of pain...
I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.
When I say... 'I am a Christian' I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner Who received God's good grace, somehow!

The Haircut
Got this via email this morning... Something to think about.....
One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.
When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.
Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.
Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The professor is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.'
Then, a Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut , and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Member of Parliament is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut.
And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the Members of Parliament.
Vote carefully this year.

Lost & Found
Clive recalled having heard the pedestrian gate slam shut at about 21h30 the previous evening, but after checking out the window & not noticing anything out of the ordinary, thought it was Gloria coming home.
Upon closer inspection at the gate, they noticed shoe prints against the gate where someone appeared to have climbed over. Once inside, the pedestrian gate was opened with a screwdriver & the dogs let out.
Fortunately, Wum, being such a big dog would be easy to spot roaming the streets. We found him about an hour later wandering aimlessly a street down from home. We brought him home & he spent the rest of the morning all depressed in the garden & wouldn't even eat.
Trixi, however wasn't going to be that easy. I spent about two hours walking up & down the neighbourhood, sticking posters on lampposts & looking for her. Later in the afternoon, after fetching the boys from school, I decided to do one last trip around the neighbourhood to stick more posters & check if we could spot her. Jesse still insisted that wit a little hope & lots of faith, we would find her.
We'd just stuck a poster at the primary school up the road, when I decided to take the last available poster to the Doggie Parlour at a shopping centre about 4km from our house. I was just about to give up when I felt I should just turn right into the next road. Just as we went around the bend in the road, lo & behold, there she was, our little Trixi, lost & bewildered in the middle of the road.
We brought her home, much to Wum's deligt.
Now they're both home safe & sound & we can testify that God still answers prayers, even if sometimes our prayers seem unimportant or insignificant.
