"Mommy!" comes the cry from the neighborhood park play structure, and a dozen moms turn their heads to see if it is their child calling for them! It's a "mom" thing to do, I guess, and somehow, it seems comforting and safe in that environment to have all those mothers responding to a child's cry for his or her mom. It doesn't seem confusing or random that the cry would generate so many responses.
In the same way, it is comforting and safe to know that Jesus calls us all by name, and it is His voice we recognize and respond to when we follow Him. It says in Matthew 10:4, "When He has brought out all His own, He goes on ahead of them, and His sheep follow Him because they know His voice."
There are many voices out there in the world, competing for our attention. We need to recognize Jesus' voice because He will never steer us off course or mislead us. There are other voices, Satan's especially, that will harm us, deceive us, lie to us, and steer us off our course. In order for us to distinguish Jesus' voice from others, we've got to get used to the sound of His voice. It's the voice that calls out to us in love.
It's the one that gives us courage to take risks and meet challenges. It's the one that encourages us when we doubt, and the one that firmly but lovingly gets us back on track when we fall off. Listen! It's Jesus calling out to us. Let us all turn our heads in response!
May you have a BLESSED day!!!
